Air Tightness Testing Training
“Air-tightness” signifies the extent to which the building fabric enables either inward or outward air permeation. Through Approved Document Part L (England and Wales), Section 6 (Scotland) and Part F (Northern Ireland), the Government is improving energy efficiency in the built environment by stipulating, amongst other things, that specific levels of air-tightness for new buildings are both achieved and verified via air-tightness testing.
Air-tightness testing establishes the rate at which air is able to move through the building envelope at a reference differential pressure (the difference between the inside and the outside the building) of 50Pa.
The envelope is the shell of the building that contains the conditioned air and separates it from non-conditioned areas, such as ventilated roof voids, garages and external spaces.
Registering
Having completed the training and report submission, candidates can apply for BINDT registration as a domestic air-tester. Only when the registration process has been successfully completed are candidates registered to carry out domestic air-tightness tests.
What is BINDT?
The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) is an organisation of varying technical disciplines covering a range of non-destructive testing.
