Acoustic

Against the background of Approved Document Part E, the increasing prevalence of standards such as BB93 and HTM 08-01 is increasing the need for builders and contractors to achieve and demonstrate acoustic compliance.
Stroma demonstrate acoustic experience in:

  • Environmental Noise
  • Educational Health
  • Airborne and Impact Noise

Acoustic performance can be a critical factor in assessing whether a building is fit for purpose. Poorly designed and built structures and details can cause areas of buildings to be unsuitable for the function they were intended to perform.

Stroma Contracting use a varied product portfolio to ensure the required decibel rating is achieved.

Acoutic Testing

Stroma Contracting are experts in the design, supply and installation of all forms of passive fire protection, air and acoustic sealing. Working closely with our testing and consultancy division, providing pragmatic and cost effective packages to meet the specific needs of most construction projects. Our comprehensive solutions ensure that the requirements of part S, L and E are met where needed.

Sound Insulation Testing
Stroma provide acoustic testing, carried out to the required BS EN ISO 140-4:1998 & 140-7:1998 methodologies, to prove (or otherwise) compliance with Part E. Results are calculated and communicated on site to client staff, followed by a formal report with test data results and certification a few days thereafter.

Acoustic Testing of Schools
Stroma are also able to complete acoustic testing on Schools in order to comply with guidelines set out in Building Bulletin 93 - The Acoustic Design of Schools.  This involves ensuring sound insulation; reverberation time and ambient noise levels all meet the specified criteria.

The Regulations

New build or converted residential buildings and schools are subject to Building Regulations Approved Document Part E (‘Resistance to the Passage of Sound’), which stipulates sound insulation criteria for separating walls and floors. In short, the regulations set standards for insulation against ‘airborne’ (speech & TV) and ‘impact’ (foot-fall) related sound transmission.

The requirement is for 10% of flats, co-joined dwellings or rooms for residential purposes (e.g. hotels, nursing homes, etc) from any one development to be tested.  However, this percentage may increase if dwelling designs vary within a development, or in the event of initial test failures.
