Domestic Air Tightness Training

 

Under the Building Regulations (April 2006) Approved Document L1A, domestic air tightness testers must be registered with the British Institute for Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT).

 

They must have attended a validated training course provided by a BINDT Accredited Training Establishment, such as Stroma Technology, and be following the BINDT continual assessment program through to issue of an Unrestricted Certificate of Approval.

 

As the Accreditation Body, BINDT will administer and manage the scheme throughout.

BINDT Scheme Structure

 

The BINDT Explanatory Notes document explains the structure of the scheme in more detail and can be supplied on request, or direct from BINDT on 01604 630124, but in summary is as follows (including fees where applicable):

 

Start up Procedure & Costs:

1. Individuals must register with BINDT (Tel:01604 630124); £150 paid to BINDT.
2. Purchase approved blower door equipment from an ATTMA-member company, such as Stroma; Costs as above, paid direct to the equipment provider.
3. Attend 3-day training course provided by an Accredited Training Establishment, such as Stroma; £1,200 paid directly to the training provider.

 

Milestone	Immediate Post Successful Course	12 Months After Start-Up	Every 12 months Afterwards
Requirements	3 non commercial Test Reports are submitted to the training body (Stroma) for review. Requires successful submission.	10 Test Reports are reviewed and random sites audits carried out	10 Test Reports reviews. Top-up training if needed
Cost	£550 paid to BINDT	£300 paid to BINDT	£400 paid to BINDT, plus cost of training.

 

There are three types of Certificate of Approval:

1. Probationary (0 to 3 months from completion of initial training course)
2. Intermediate (4 to 12 months from completion of initial training course)
3. Unrestricted (more than 12 months after completion of initial training course. Each certificate is valid for 12 months)

Following each stage of assessment, the Accredited Training Establishment will advise BINDT of successful course completion and BINDT will register the candidate’s name on the ‘Registered Tester’ listing.

The 3-day course provides sufficient theory and practical hands on training, combined with pre-course reading, to pass the final day examinations and commence the BINDT registration process.

Day 3 - Examination (Divided into 3 Sections)

1. Theory Examination (1.5hrs)
2. Envelope Measurement Examination (2.0hrs)

Note: Delegates are required to pass all examination sections in order to successfully complete the course. The pass mark for each section is 70%.

Pre-Course Knowledge
To pass this course, it is strongly suggested that delegates will need to be numerate to GCSE level. Furthermore, delegates will need to be familiar with the Building Regulations and ATTMA TS1, as examination questions will be based on these documents.

Delegates will be provided in advance with a list of equipment they should bring to the course and will be issued with a training pack at the start of the course.
